Frequently asked questions

Why should I buy a One Human Rhythm handpan?

When you buy from One Human Rhythm, you’re not just choosing an instrument, you’re buying from someone who actually plays, teaches, and understands the process of getting started.

We know how overwhelming it can be in the beginning. Different scales, frequencies, prices… it’s a lot. So with OHR, the goal is to keep things simple and help you choose a handpan that’s going to sound great and feel right from day one.

Every handpan is carefully crafted and tuned by experienced makers, with a focus on clean resonance, stability, and playability, so you can feel confident in what you’re getting.

And you’re not left on your own after you buy either. If you need help, guidance, or just want to improve your playing, we are here to support you.

At the end of the day, it’s about making sure you receive an instrument you genuinely love and enjoy playing.

That’s what matters most.

Do I need any musical experience to play the handpan?

No—handpans are very intuitive and beginner-friendly.

The notes are arranged in a way that naturally sounds good together, so you can explore and create without needing any music theory. Most people start with no experience at all and quickly find their own rhythm and flow.

Dan also shares beginner-friendly tutorials that keep things simple and easy to follow. There’s also a structured beginner course available designed to help you build confidence and start playing without any prior musical background. If you’d like to join, please visit the Learn the Handpan page on our website for more information.

People of all ages and experience levels can learn to play—it’s all about enjoying the process.

What key or scale should I start with?

If you’re just getting started, we usually recommend the D Kurd scale.

It’s one of the most popular and beginner-friendly options, and a big reason for that is simple & most tutorials online are based around D Kurd, so it’s much easier to follow along and learn.

It’s also a very intuitive scale to play. The notes work well together, so you can explore and create without needing much theory, which makes it ideal when you’re starting out.

That said, there’s no strict rule. If you’ve heard another scale that you really connect with, go with that. The most important thing is that you like the sound of your instrument.

If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to help you choose—just reach out and we’ll point you in the right direction.

What’s the difference between 432 Hz and 440 Hz tuning/frequency?

The main difference is how the handpan is tuned in relation to other instruments.

440Hz is the standard tuning used in most modern music. If you’re planning to play with other musicians—like guitarists, pianists, or backing tracks—this is usually the best option, as everything will line up properly.

432Hz is tuned slightly lower. A lot of people feel it has a more relaxed, softer, and more grounding quality when playing, especially on your own. It’s often associated with “healing” frequencies, and many players are naturally drawn to it for meditation, solo playing, or just unwinding.

Some people strongly believe 432Hz is more in tune with the body or nature, while others simply prefer the way it sounds. There’s a lot of discussion around it, but in the end, it really comes down to what feels right to you when you play.

There’s no right or wrong choice:
• Playing with other instruments → go 440Hz
• Mostly playing solo or for your own enjoyment → 432Hz is a great option

If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out and we’ll help you choose what suits you best.

How do I choose the right handpan?

Choosing your first handpan (or even your next one) can feel a bit overwhelming—but it really comes down to a few simple things.

The main factors are:
• Scale (the overall sound and feel) – this is the most important. Go with something you genuinely enjoy listening to. If you’re unsure, D Kurd is a great starting point.
• Tuning (432Hz or 440Hz) – depends on whether you want to play solo or with other instruments
• Number of notes – fewer notes can be easier to start with, while more notes give you more range as you progress

If you’re just starting out, we usually recommend keeping it simple and going with something that’s easy to play and widely supported by tutorials.

And if you’re unsure at any point, just reach out—we’re always happy to guide you and help you choose something you’ll genuinely love playing.

How are your handpans made?

All of our handpans are made to order, so each one is crafted specifically for the person receiving it.

They’re built and hand-tuned by experienced makers who specialise in handpan construction. The process involves carefully shaping the steel and hand-hammering each note area before it’s tuned.

Tuning is done in multiple stages, with each note being adjusted and refined by hand to ensure it’s clear, balanced, and sits properly with the rest of the instrument. It’s a precise process that takes time and experience to get right.

Once completed, each handpan is thoroughly checked and sound tested before it’s shipped. Each instrument is also reviewed prior to dispatch to ensure it meets the standard we expect from OHR.

Can I customise my handpan?

Yes—there are a number of ways you can customise your handpan.

We offer options across things like scale (key), tuning (432Hz or 440Hz), note layouts, and finish/colour.

That said, not every possible combination is available. We focus on scales and layouts that we know work well and deliver the best sound and playing experience.

If you already have something in mind, feel free to reach out. And if you’re not sure, we’ll guide you through the options and help you choose something that fits what you’re looking for.

What happens after I place my order?

Once you place your order, you’ll receive a confirmation email.

Your handpan then goes into production, where it’s carefully crafted and prepared. As each instrument is made to order, this stage takes a little time—but it ensures your handpan is built specifically for you.

Once it’s ready, it’s checked, packaged securely, and shipped out. You’ll receive tracking details once your order is on its way, and we’ll keep you updated throughout the process.

Shipping timeframes

Shipping times can vary depending on your location and any customs clearance processes. Delivery typically takes around 2–4 weeks, although in some cases it may take slightly longer.

Customs clearance

As our instruments are shipped internationally, packages may occasionally be selected for random customs inspections. This is a normal procedure carried out by customs authorities and does not indicate any issue with your order.

If this happens, delivery may take a little longer than expected, but we’ll keep you informed and provide updates as soon as possible.

How much is shipping & do you ship worldwide?

Yes, we ship worldwide.

Can I cancel my handpan order?

Because of this, orders can be cancelled before production starts. Once production is underway, cancellations and refunds are no longer possible.

If you’re unsure which scale or model to choose, we always recommend reaching out before placing your order—we’re happy to guide you and help you make the right choice.

What is the warranty or return policy?

Every OHR handpan is made to order, and we stand behind the quality of each instrument.

If your handpan arrives with a genuine issue—such as being significantly out of tune or having a clear manufacturing fault—please contact us within 15 days of delivery with photos or video, and we’ll work with you to resolve it.

Depending on the situation, solutions may include local retuning or, where appropriate, further action such as repair or replacement. Each case is assessed individually to ensure the best outcome.

Our goal is always to make sure you end up with an instrument you’re happy with.

As each handpan is custom made, we do not offer refunds once production has begun. For full details, please refer to our refund policy or feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

How often do handpans need tuning?

This can vary, but a well-made handpan should stay in tune for a long time—often years with normal use.

Tuning stability mainly comes down to how the instrument is played and cared for. Playing with a controlled touch, avoiding knocks or drops, and keeping it away from extreme heat or humidity will all help maintain its tuning.

Like any acoustic instrument, small changes can happen over time, especially with regular use. If needed, handpans can be professionally re-tuned to bring them back to their best.

In general, with proper care, re-tuning isn’t something you’ll need to worry about often.

What materials are used?

We use two premium materials:

Stainless Steel

Bright, resonant, long sustain — great for expressive melodies and slow playing.

Ember Steel

Warm, soft, controlled sound with less metallic overtones — ideal for meditative flow, grounding, and deep resonance. Ember steel is slightly more stable especially when going above 10 notes.

Both materials are durable, responsive, and deliver beautiful tone depending on your playing style.

How do I care for my handpan?

Handpans are relatively low maintenance, but a little care will keep them sounding their best for years.
• Wipe it down after playing using a soft microfibre cloth to remove moisture and fingerprints
• Store it in a dry place, ideally in its case, away from humidity, heat, and direct sunlight
• Apply a light layer of handpan oil every few months to help protect the surface
• Avoid knocks, drops, or heavy impact, as this can affect the tuning
• Remove jewellery before playing to prevent scratches

With proper care, your handpan will stay in great condition and last for many years.

Where are your handpans manufactured?

Our handpans are crafted in China by a highly experienced team of professional makers we’ve partnered with closely.

In handpan making, what matters most isn’t the location—it’s the skill of the makers, the materials used, and the consistency of the process. Our instruments are built using hands-on techniques and careful tuning, rather than mass-production methods.

We’ve been very selective in choosing who we work with, and maintain a close working relationship with our makers to ensure consistent quality and standards. Each handpan is made to order and reviewed to ensure it meets the standard we expect from OHR before it’s shipped.
